Gaddama 2011 Malayalam Movie Watch Online

Khaddama (Malayalam: ഗദ്ദാമ, Arabic: خدامة‎, English translation: Housemaid) is a 2011 Malayalam drama film co–written and directed by Kamal. It stars Kavya Madhavan in the title role, with Sreenivasan, Biju Menon, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Sukumari, Suraj Venjaramood, Lena, Jaffer Idukki, Muralikrishnan and Manu Jose playing other pivotal roles. Produced by P. V. Pradeep under the banner of Anitha Productions, it features songs composed by Bennet Veetraag, background music by M. Jayachandran, cinematography by Manoj Pillai, and editing by K. Rajagopal.

The title of the film is a colloquial version of Arabic word for servant “Khadima” (Arabic: خادمة‎). The film narrates the story of the immigrants in the Gulf, through exploring the life of a housemaid in Saudi Arabia (Kavya Madhavan). It is scripted by K. Girishkumar and Kamal, based on a reportage by K. U. Iqbal. Iqbal’s feature, published in Bhashaposhini, was inspired by real–life incidents of a Kerala–born housemaid. Principal photography of the film began in October 2010, and took place mainly in the Middle East. After a special screening for industry people in the last week of January, the film made its theatrical debut in Kerala on 4 February 2011. The film’s release was banned across Middle East.

The film was well received by film critics, with most of them applauding it as a realistic film. The performance of Kavya Madhavan has been rated as one of the best in her career, while the film itself is regarded as the best one in Malayalam with a Gulf-centric theme.

Plot

Razak Kottekkad (Sreenivasan) is a migrant social worker in Saudi Arabia, who makes an effort to try and identify “unknown Indians” whose bodies arrive at the mortuary and secure their return back home. He feels it his incumbency to repatriate those who lose their passport and other documents and finally end up in prison. He comes to the aid of those who meet with accidents and is always ready to help the expatriates in their numerous problems and share their consternation regarding their lives. He is a real altruist, who neglects his life and family for the sake of the needy. A friend of Razak, who is the editor of a malayalam daily, shows a photograph of a woman to Razak just to find out whether he knows her. She is Aswathi, who hails from Pattambi, a remote village in Kerala. The editor sees the prospect of an interesting story, but they have only the details of the passport which is not enough. As the editor instructed, Razak sets out to know more about the enigmatic character, Aswathi.

Meanwhile, we are shown the story of Aswathi (Kavya Madhavan), who is a lower mid-class Malayali woman from Pattambi, Kerala. She gets married to a small-time goon, Radhakrishnan (Biju Menon) who confesses her about his pre-marriage life and assures a complete change. Unfortunately after a short period of happy life, he gets killed. Due to the financial constraints of her family and the untimely death of her husband, Ashwathy is forced to be the bread earner of the house and opts to go to the gulf. Usman (Suraj Venjaramood), who is the car driver of an Arab family, belongs to Aswathi’s village, and he arranges the visa for Aswathi and brings her to Saudi Arabia. She lands in Saudi Arabia and many surprises await her, starting at the airport itself. She is forced to wear a burqa at all times, as part of the dress code of the country. She is subsequently exposed to a rigid culture and a slavery-like vocation, and is taken up under a sponsor to work for him as a maid. She joins as house-maid in the Arab villa along with an Indonesian woman (Fatma).

Aswathi had to face numerous troubles – sexual abuse and battery in the sponsor’s house. Ashwathy is accompanied by Usman, who actually brought her to all the miseries. However, he indulges in a sexual affair with the Indonesian maid there and gets caught and is kicked out of the sponsor’s house. Aswathi helps the other maid to escape the premises and in turn is tortured as punishment. One night, when the sponsor and his family go out, she jumps over the huge walls of the villa and escapes.

The story follows Razak, who tries to trace Aswathi who had mysteriously disappeared during an attempt to escape torture. On the parallel, we see Aswathi running into some good and bad people. She walks along the long winding road in the desert. She gets exhausted in the hot sun. She tries to stop vehicles and gets into a truck that stops on her way. She sits at the back among a flock of sheep. Embarrassingly, she understands the truck diverts from the highway and enters the un trodden path that winds up and down the desert. The strange world outside is not woman friendly and she eventually culminates in a deportation. The laws and rules in Saudi Arabia are totally rigid and she stands spell bound as to where to go. After entering into much more troubles, she reaches Razak, who was actually in a search for her. He inquires her about the complete story. He brings miscreants in front of justice and eventually helps Aswathi to leave the damned place.
